The
Boulevard and You…What Are the Rules?
By Ann Smith
Have you ever noticed the creative parking abilities of some neighbours?
In an effort not to block their sidewalk, some homeowners choose to park
parallel to the sidewalk in the driveway extension – the little piece of
the boulevard that is cleverly disguised as the driveway. It’s an
illusion, however, as that small piece of property actually belongs to the
city. And in London, this kind of parking is considered a violation.
So, where can you park beyond the driveway? This presents a challenge in
many neighborhoods, especially during winter months when street parking is
reduced or prohibited. And when overnight guests need to park, what can
you do? Park on the lawn? You may run out of options.
The incongruity of some city bylaws is that it’s your responsibility to
maintain the boulevard. You are responsible to keep the grass cut in the
summer and the driveway clear in winter, if you want access. And for the
record, it’s an offence to put snow from your driveway or sidewalk onto the
street under the Highway Traffic Act.
So, even though the boulevard is not legally yours, you need to consider it
in the upkeep of your property. After all, it’s part of the outward
appearance and helps to provide the overall first impression if trying to
sell. You’ll also want to consider the available parking space to meet
your needs before purchasing a property.
If you’re moving to a
new area or you’re not familiar with the city’s parking bylaws, ask your
real estate agent for information. Not only will it make the neighbours
happy, you can avoid substantial fines.
