Civic Offerings & Local Amenities in Your Community

By Ann Smith, Broker

To entice both tourists and future residents, most towns and cities have their municipal attractions and amenities listed on the Internet – a valuable resource when considering your move into unfamiliar territory.

When deciding on which city or town – or perhaps bedroom community – to move to there are several typical requirements most families look to fulfill, above the number of bedrooms and size of the kitchen. These may include proximity to:

  • Protection – police, fire department, emergency medical services
  • Schools – daycare, elementary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions
  • Shopping – food and other life necessities
  • Health care – doctors, dentists, hospitals and trauma/special treatment units
  • Libraries

Other amenities you may look for nearby are:

  • Acceptance – programs for the less fortunate and/or disabled
  • Culture – theatre, art galleries, and concert halls
  • Festivals – celebrations of ancestral diversity of its inhabitants
  • Recreation – sports, physical activity programs, and gyms
  • Financial institutions

And you may also want to consider:

  • Tax base – mill rates
  • Municipal government – fiscal responsibility to inhabitants
  • Ecological and environmental consciousness – garbage and recycling programs
  • Commerce – viability of various sized businesses
  • Community – vibrant family-oriented, multicultural atmosphere

If you’re considering a move to an unfamiliar area, consider visiting as a tourist before making a decision. Sometimes, neighbouring towns are better for raising a family, while working in the larger nearby cosmopolitan area…or the cultural attractions may make you want to live in the heart of the city.

Your Realtor can help you find answers about the location as well…and then help you to find the home of your dreams.
