Your Community Lifeline
By Ann Smith
If home is where the heart is then the community you live in could be your
lifeline. Communities pull together to do many things—they fundraise, they
celebrate, they keep an eye on each other’s property and children, and
pitch in when someone is in need…or perhaps they don’t.
It’s important to pick the right community for you — one that fits your
needs and expectations. Do you want a community that is filled with active
children, or a quieter area that reflects your retirement lifestyle?
Consider the following when you begin your property search.
·
Choose
a Realtor that knows the nuances of the neighbourhood you’re considering.
·
Visit
the local grocery store, drugstore, or corner store. You’ll get a feel for
the area demographics by who frequents the store and the degree of
neighbourly friendliness.
·
Consider which public buildings suit your needs within the vicinity. You
may or may not appreciate a Community Centre with 6:00 a.m. events or late
night concerts.
·
Green
spaces are increasingly popular in neighbourhoods. If you have pets in need
of walking you’ll want to know where you can go.
·
If
you’re a shift-worker, you’ll want to experience the area in the daytime
when you’ll likely want it quieter. Being next to an elementary school at
recess could prove havoc to your sleep.
·
If you
have young children, there are many areas you’ll want to ensure you have
access to. Schools are primary but don’t forget safe playgrounds and other
children on the block.
·
If
you’re sports oriented, an arena, golf course, basketball or tennis courts
would be appealing.
Make yourself a list of the hobbies or characteristics pertinent to your
family and see if the community you’re considering fits with this stage of
your life.
