The Importance of Curb Appeal
By Ann Smith
You know what your home looks like from the outside, after all you go in
and out several times most days. But we often overlook key details that
could turn a potential buyer away.
If you’re thinking of selling, how does your curb appeal stand up?
Consider taking a different perspective as you prepare your home for sale.
Start by taking a photograph of your home – from the curb.
With this buyer perspective at hand, make yourself a list to preen and
green…
Preening
·
Remove
debris and excess clutter. No gnomes, flamingos, cowboy figures, or other
plastic décor – no matter how cute you think they are.
·
Keep
walkways clear and neat – ensure they are de-iced in winter.
·
Ensure
the front door is in perfect working condition.
·
Apply
fresh paint on shutters, doors, railings, fences, verandah/porch, and trim.
·
Wash
all windows, even during the winter months.
·
Clean
out eavestroughs.
·
Consider updating the lighting fixture and mailbox. Add inexpensive
outdoor lighting to illuminate the walkway and add life to your home at
night.
Greening
·
Mulch
around trees and flower beds.
·
Install
colourful planters and hanging baskets.
·
Keep
lawn trimmed and lush.
·
Remove
built up dirt, grass, and weeds from between paving stones.
·
Remove
any dead or unattractive shrubs.
·
Shape
trees and shrubs.
Remember, your curb appeal is the first – and last – impression you give a
potential buyer. You can easily entice someone to step inside your home
with a great first impression…and provide a lasting impression as they
drive away. The key is to not make your home out to be something it isn’t
and create disappointment once the potential buyer comes inside. Clean,
neat, and tidy applies to everyone.
