Downsizing
...Transitioning from Pack Rat to Simple Simon
By Ann Smith
Downsizing is
rarely easy — especially when many of your treasured possessions are
wrapped in layers of memories. But you can’t take it all with you! It’s
time to unwrap the emotions, roll up your sleeves, and figure out what
keepsakes you can take with you.
You’ll sell your house faster if you make it look larger by de-cluttering
and eliminating the items you know you won’t require in the future. By
doing this before you list, your home will look more spacious, and you can
take time to focus on the precious pieces. Here are some ideas to make the
downsizing transition easier.
-
Create a scaled
floor plan of your new home. Determine which favourite items will easily
fit into this space. Be creative with the positioning of your furniture,
accessories, and knick knacks but avoid cluttering your new home.
-
Remember that if you
cannot go “out,” consider going “up.” Shelves, hooks, baskets, and other
storage devices will give you more space than is immediately apparent.
Stores like IKEA, Solutions, or Canadian Tire have storage items that are
practical and fun to display.
-
Decide which
heirlooms you can gift to your family, friends, or charities before the
move. Start in areas that are currently used for storage. Think to
yourself, “If I haven’t used it for a while, why not give it to someone
who will?” And keep in mind, that joyfully gifting items now lets you see
the receiver getting pleasure from your treasures.
-
Give yourself time
to go through this process. A marathon packing session does not give your
psyche the grieving space needed when purging your belongings. Be gentle
with yourself, ask for help, talk to someone close, and keep a box of
tissues nearby — you may feel drained both emotionally and physically
even after only a few hours.
-
Consider hiring a
downsizing organization. These folks move you, hang your pictures, take
care of address changes, and a myriad of other services. Some companies
specialize in the unique needs of seniors.
As you’re going
through the downsizing process, keep the benefits in mind — no more snow
shovelling, no more grass to cut, less time spent cleaning…and more time
for enjoyable activities. Plus, the reduced use of hydro, water, and gas
means more money in your pocket.
