Tips to
Make Your Move Easy
By Ann Smith
You’ve done it! The papers are signed and closing day is fast
approaching. It’s time to get ready for the big move. But where do you
begin?
First, you need to decide whether you want to do the move by yourself or
hire professionals to help. Either way, it’s up to you to sort through
your closets and decide what to pack and what to discard. But don’t leave
everything to the last minute or you could easily become overwhelmed.
·
This
may be a good time to finally get rid of all the “stuff” you never use and
hold a garage sale. You may even make a few bucks in the process.
o
If you
haven’t used it or worn it within a year, consider selling it.
o
Price
low and be open to offers.
o
Place
ads in local papers, post signs, and distribute flyers.
·
Decide
early on if you plan to hire professional movers. If you’re moving to
another city or across the country, it may be your best bet.
o
Ask
friends for recommendations of moving companies they’ve used.
o
Check
the Better Business Bureau to ensure any complaints have been handled
promptly and fairly.
o
Get at
least three estimates in writing and find out what other hidden costs could
affect the final price. A salesperson should come to your home to ensure
nothing is missed – do not accept an estimate over the telephone.
·
If you
plan on doing the move yourself, line up people to help and rent the
appropriate size of truck, if needed, well in advance.
o
Check
licensing requirements for driving larger vehicles.
o
Check
with your insurance company to make sure of your coverage in case of damage
to your possessions.
o
Have
furniture pads and tie-down straps available to secure items.
o
Have a
dolly on hand to move larger items.
·
Notify
companies of your change of address and arrange for service at your new
home:
o
Telephone, cable, Internet, gas, water, electricity, and hydro companies
o
Financial institutions and credit card companies
o
Newspaper, magazine subscriptions, and other home services
o
Insurance, driver’s license
By working out the details early and making sure you don’t move items
you’ll never use again, you can look forward to the big day and making your
new home feel like home.
