New Year's Resolutions & Your Home
By Ann Smith,
Broker
This is the time of year when many people
make a commitment to change in the year ahead. They want to lose weight,
workout more, be better, do more, do less…and the list goes on. While
making your personal New Year’s resolutions this year, consider making some
for your home. Whether you live in a house, an apartment, or a condo, here
are a few ideas to consider.
-
Organize warranties, appliance purchases,
and other major household purchases in one handy file. Make note of any
tune ups that should be scheduled or eligible dates to apply for warranty
rebates.
-
Adopt a “Why wait for spring? Do it now!”
attitude. Don’t procrastinate when it comes to fixing or repairing home
items. Does the front hall need a new coat of paint? Does the laundry
sink need a new washer to prevent a constant drip?
-
Make best use of your time and abilities.
Know what you can do yourself to save money and what is better left to
professionals to save time and frustration.
-
Look for ways to make your home green to
decrease your carbon footprint in the world.
-
Make the transition for an upcoming move as
smooth as possible by deciding now when the ideal time to move would be
for your family, especially if children and schools are involved.
-
Do your homework early if you want to move.
Know what price you can afford if purchasing and/or what your house is
worth if selling.
-
Is a cottage on the horizon for you this
year? Look into where, when, and the best price for what you “have to
have” versus “want to have.” Investment purchases may be a good way to
add to your financial portfolio.
-
Improve your personal credit today to put
you in good stead for purchases you may want to make – whether it is a
big screen TV or a new roof.
-
Insurance – Are you adequately protected or
paying too much? Have you added a hot tub, burglar alarm, or renovated
the kitchen? Your insurance provider needs to know.
-
Wills – If it has been a long time since
you updated your will and how your estate is to be divided, now is a good
time to consider a review.
-
Relax – enjoy yourself – de-stress your
life...make choices that leave room for you to unwind.
I wish you a joyous and prosperous New Year.
From start to finish, may 2011 be all that it possibly can be for you.
