Remodel or Move?

      …the Big Dilemma

By Ann Smith

Do you feel that your current home no longer suits your lifestyle?  Are there more of you living under one roof – or has your children moved out? Perhaps you’ve changed jobs and are now working from home.

No matter what the reason, this could be the time to make the big decision – do we move…or do we remodel?

The first step in making the right decision for you and your family is to decide what it is about your current home that you like – and what just doesn’t seem to fit any longer.

Is your current home in the right location? If not, it’s an easy decision...it’s time to start house hunting.  However, if the location is perfect, you can either look for your dream home in the area or research the cost involved with adding on or redesigning your current space.

If you need to add a home office, check out the zoning bylaws in your area.  And look at your neighbourhood.  Ask your real estate agent about the current market value of your home in its present condition compared to neighbouring homes.  You want to make sure that you can get your investment out of the home in the event of a resale down the road.

Other things to consider before making the decision on whether to stay or should you go:

  • Will remodeling create the living space you need?

  • How much will the remodel cost?

  • Can you afford it?

  • Can you endure living through the remodeling process (especially if it concerns your kitchen or bath areas) or should you move somewhere else temporarily?

  • Is there an urgency factor? Remember, remodeling takes time – usually more than you anticipate.

  • Is it more feasible to buy a home that will suit your needs?

Once you’ve analyzed the options, it’s time to trust your instincts.  Go with your feelings.  Only you know how you feel about your current home and your neighbourhood.  The answer may have been with you all along.
