Planning Your Retirement Move
By Ann Smith
So, you’re thinking of
a retirement move. This could mean packing up the large family home and
downsizing to a maintenance-free condo or smaller home…or it could require
moving into a retirement village or assisted living facilities. A lot will
depend on your health and finances.
Preplanning can go a
long way to ensure a move that you can live with.
·
Plan your
move well in advance – don’t wait until you no longer have a choice.
·
Consider
where you want to live. Do you prefer a warmer climate? Would you like a
view of the mountains? Does a home by a lake or golf course appeal to you?
·
Do you
plan on traveling frequently? If so, a retirement home in a
security-controlled environment may be appealing for your peace of mind.
·
To ease
your way into this life transition, consider purchasing your ideal
retirement home well in advance and rent it out to earn income until you’re
ready to move.
·
Consider
travel time – to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping and other frequent
errands. Will you need to drive far or can you enjoy a leisurely walk?
·
Advanced
planning gives you time to downsize inside your home as well. Have
family members remove their possessions. Give away or sell what you no
longer need. Have repairs and upgrades completed in advance so you don’t
have to rush these jobs and feel overwhelmed.
·
Your
first choice in a retirement home may have a waiting list. Don’t wait until
it’s too late to get on that list.
·
Ask your
Realtor for a home evaluation. Know how much your current home is worth
and have a firm understanding of your finances and your options.
