A Sense of Community
By Ann Smith,

Getting involved in
your new community is an ideal way to meet new friends and find out all
that’s available to you and your family. Most towns and cities have Web
sites where you can learn about civic offerings – and they’re eager for new
volunteers.
Welcome Wagon has
been around for more than 75 years; a name that has been synonymous with
finding out about your local community events, shops, schools, etc.
Register yourself or someone you know who has recently moved into your area
by going to
http://www.welcomewagon.ca/en/index.php.
Another effective
way of learning about your new community is to become an active participant
in one of the local service clubs and/or organizations in the area. Such
groups may include:
-
Lions/Lionesses
-
Kinsmen/Kinettes
- Masons
- Kiwanis
- Shriners
- 4-H Club
- Jaycees
|
- Junior
Achievement
- Rotarians
- Big
Brothers/Big Sisters
- Red Cross
- Optimists
-
Toastmasters
- Heritage

A few groups that
are geared to a particular neighbourhood and allow you to be self-serving
by helping your children develop and have fun while they bond with other
neighbourhood children include:
- Block Parent
- Home & School
Association
- Neighbourhood
Watch Program
- Coaching team
sports such as Hockey, Soccer, Baseball, etc.
- Scouts/Guides
There are several
benefits from joining any of these organizations:
- You have a voice
in the activities your children are involved in.
- You have the
satisfaction that comes from volunteering your time to a worthwhile
cause.
- You get a chance
to network with the possible “movers and shakers” of your new community.
- Word of mouth
connections allow you to find good businesses nearby that support local
endeavours.
- If you’re
starting a new business, volunteering for your community has added
benefits of finding key suppliers and new clients.
Enjoy the local
activities of your community by jumping in and participating – besides, you
never know where these new networking connections will lead you. Be
grateful you can give of your time to your new neighbourhood – and the
community will thank you.
