Moving 101
By Ann Smith
Whether you have the art of packing down to a science or you struggle with
what comes first in the moving game, I’ve put together an article series
designed to help you make a smooth transition. Tips will cover everything
from packing, moving plants and animals, to evaluating a moving company.
What to Do One to Two Weeks Before You
Move
Moving day is
looming…but in only a couple of short weeks it will all be over and you’ll
be setting up a new home. While you
continue to pack,
there are a number of things you should do now to ensure a smooth
transition.
- You’ve already
booked the moving truck, right? Now’s the time to re-confirm!
- Also re-confirm
plans with your movers, whether that means a professional moving company,
family or friends. And if it’s the latter, be sure to pre-order the
pizza.
- If traveling out
of town, confirm the travel arrangements you made
one to two months
ago.
- Apartments or
condos with elevators will require you to reserve the service elevator.
- Infants and
children have special needs and concerns – make sure you have them looked
after.
- If you’re moving
far away, you’ll need to close bank accounts and have funds wired to the
new bank you opened a couple of months ago. But first, ensure all cheques
and automatic payments are processed.
- Empty the
safe-deposit box.
- Call your
insurance agent to confirm you are covered during the entire move as well
as in your new home.
- Plan meals to
keep food storage to a minimum. Defrost freezers and refrigerators then
place a deodorizer inside to control odours.
- Call your hydro,
water, gas, cable, and Internet providers to turn off existing services
and arrange for hook ups at your new home to start the day you move in.
- If you don’t
have a cell phone, do not disconnect your telephone service until you are
definitely out of the home – and then make sure it is connected at the
new location the moment you arrive.
- Inform
newspaper, magazine subscriptions, and all necessary organizations of
your move and have them change your address to correspond with the date
of your move.
It’s a good idea to
keep a note book to list your “To Do’s,” and cross off items when
completed.
Stay tuned…next month I’ll share things you need to know when
looking for a
moving company to hire.
