Why
Wait For Spring? Fix It Now!
By Ann Smith,

Spring is just
around the corner, but why wait? Don’t procrastinate – in fixing or
repairing the items in your home that needs work now.
Does the front hall need a fresh coat of paint?
Would a new washer in the kitchen sink stop the constant drip?
Are there watermarks on the ceiling from where the roof leaked before you
replaced it?
Too many people wait too long…and what could have been a minor repair turns
into an expensive overhaul. Some things you may be able to tackle yourself,
but if you’re not an expert, you could end up saving a lot of time and
money by hiring a skilled professional.
D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself)
This is can be a money saver for smaller jobs, such as painting a room. But
if you’re looking at a major renovation, the D.I.Y. path is only
recommended if you know what you are doing (and please be honest here).
That includes ordering supplies, renting tools, doing the actual work, and
knowing when and how to get a permit.
And don’t forget the time you’ll spend researching any new Municipal Codes
that may apply to the work you’re doing – particularly for electrical and
plumbing work.
General Contractors
This is certainly the most expensive route money-wise; however this is also
the route that gives the most amount of leisure time back to the home
owner. And if the project is large, it’s probably the best route to choose.
The most time involved is at the beginning of the process, when getting
quotes from seemingly respectful companies. Once you decide on a
contractor, they take care of the job from start to finish including hiring
trades people. You can then sit back and enjoy the freedom.
Tradesmen
This may be an approach that gives the best of both worlds, particularly if
the job is a one-time type project. Trades people who specialize in one
area (electricians, plumbers, roofers) can often be hired at a lower rate.
Some will also hire themselves out for their consultation abilities.
This time of year is perfect to complete repairs and maintenance inside the
house you plan to sell. Winter weather is waning, and the summer warmth is
not urging you outside yet. Either way, what you do will improve the resale
value of your home and can help to reduce the time that it’s on the market.
